Course Description

Introduction to Hand Therapy has been attended by over 6,000 therapists since its inception over 20 years ago! It has been recognized as a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of caring for all hand injuries. This course is designed to provide P.T’s., O.T’s, ATC’s and assistants with in-depth information on evaluating and treating patients with injuries to the hand. The emphasis is on topics which are clinically applicable for patient care. Lecture portions cover the following topics: functional anatomy; comprehensive hand evaluation; exercises for strength and range of motion; modalities; wound and scar care; splinting principles; and protocols for treatment of common hand pathologies.

 Course Dates for 2018:






  • Understand the anatomy of the hand, especially as it relates to hand pathology.
  • Describe the fundamentals of a thorough hand evaluation.
  • Describe exercise techniques and equipment used in hand therapy.
  • Describe the indications for therapeutic modalities in treatment of the hand.
  • Understand wound healing principles and identify products used to effectively manage wounds and scars.
  • Discuss the etiology, pathology, and clinical treatment of common hand injuries/diseases.
  • Identify prefabricated and custom splints used to treat specific hand injuries/diagnosis
  • Express an understanding of splint categories, material selectio and design principles

Patricia has enjoy ed a varied background in her 40 years as a thera pist. She has been practicing hand therapist for over 33 years and a CHT for 26 years. Patricia has taught live continuing education seminars on various hand therapy topics since 1992 . After several years of focusing on clinical practice, Patricia has returned to her role as a professional ed ucator since 2014 . S he is enthusiasti c and excited about sharing h er extensive background and experience with both physical and occupational therapists and assistants interested in hand therapy!

MISSION STATEMENT:  Clinical Specialty Education is dedicated to promoting outstanding practice in the specialty of Hand Therapy for both Physical and Occupational Therapists. We provide continuing education classes on hand therapy that are comprehensive, relevant , and immediately applicable in the clinical setting. Clinical Specialty Education strives to provide hand therapy seminars  that reflect therapy techniques and treatment approaches based on current research and evidence based practice.  Our hand therapy education is conducted with a spirit of sharing in an enviornment which is inviting, pleasant, and conducive to learning.  All of our hand therapy classes are designed to expand the knowledge and clinical competency of physical and occupational therapists who treat patients with injuries or diseases affecting the hand and upper extremity.  We maintain an unconditional high regard for all students.
